Muphoric Sounds 12

Can't remember for the life of me where I bought this record, but once I saw the cover and saw Larry's name I picked it up. Lots of good cuts on this LP. Listen and read my review of it with a bit of Bay Area history on Muphoric Sounds And, in case you missed the memo, I write about old school songs i love that range from jazz to funk, electronic to brazilian.

Art that must leave my house

Was just listening to Jack Davey perform Iggy Pop's "I wanna be your dog" and moved hellla (a lot) of stuff today for the 90th time and decided that i need to let go of some artwork. People have been asking about it for awhile so here you go. I am selling original pieces, but it's pay what you can. Go to the page and you'll see what i mean.

Semilla

Just knocked this idea out at "art night" with Joy Liu and Tiffany Eng (gracious hosts) among other creative stars, a rough, quick, loose painting. It encompasses a pattern similar to the Ndebele house paintings in South Africa and a hand holding a fruit, a kiwi. Semilla=seeds.....

Clinica Martin Baro

So my homie hooked me up with this one. If you know any low income folks, workers, or people of color who need to be seen by a doctor for free, send them to this Clinica. In addition to this they offer help getting medicine. In the process of this Dr. Revery Barnes was my art director providing insight and laughs about this great establishment that is serving a critical need. In times of anti-immigrant laws and policies, this is greatly needed. Especially in the Latino community in the Mission. Thanks to my homie Nancy who linked me with CMB. You can find out more about them HERE. Or watch a video Josue Rojas of Pacific News Service did about them, featuring my homie physician Emilia Wilkins!

DJ Haylow Pete Rock Mix

Back in 06' I did some art for my friend DJ Haylow. Was just listening to his James Brown Tribute Mix and thought I'd shot him out because he has stayed consistent in making incredible mixes (The Love Movement, JDilla, Rel's Orchestration, A TribeCalled Quest, the list goes on) and now the brother is working on making a documentary on Roy Ayers with the Distortion 2 Static family! I could go on and on about Pete Rock(one of my favorite producers) use of composition, arranging, and sampling of Jazz music, but just peep Haylow's selection, it's Very inspirational. Listen, buy, and share this brother's mixes HERE.

Quo Magazine, Mexico DF

'

This is an illustration for Quo magazine in Mexico-DF. Just wikipedia the name and you'll find some useful information on their Mexican and Spanish sites. I came across this magazine through my neighbor. Its about science, health, psychology, and many other things I'm still trying to understand. If you're a native spanish speaker it should be no problem to read, but if you are "learning" spanish as a second language like me, it is challenging. However I welcome it. Thanks to art director Rodrigo Olmos.

Ascension

These past few months, in addition to freelance, some teaching, and the economy I had to go out and get another gig. I think most artists have to do something in order to pay bills and survive. The company I have been working with Ascension Tile and Stone has been great, the owner has been doing masterful works for decades, and it is very inspiring to step outside of my regular thought/work process and see a master craftswoman at work. Big up to "Smurf" for hooking it up.Thx Bash for putting up with my blabbering. Ascension does great bathroom and kitchen tiles for businesses, offices, and homes. The owner and chief craftswoman is also an artist, so if you are looking to have a mosaic in your relaxing happy place, holler at her.

I AM THE NU BLACK :Feature

If you follow African music, artists, films, fashion, or culture you will probably enjoy I AM THE NU BLACK's weekly posts that run the gambit of creativity through Africans all across the world. I found out about this London based cultural hub through Society HAE and have been following them ever since. At the time they were having an art contest, for which I missed the deadline. So I decided to hit up Gabi from Nu Black and she asked a few questions. Check it out here I mention a bunch of people I know, and a bunch of people I'd like to work with. Peace, love, and humble light. Shout out to Leo Docuyanan for the dope photo!

Photos from LIFE is LIVING fest-West Oakland

The Life Is Living Fest happened about two weeks ago and I'm just starting to get all the photos together, but here are a few of me and the homies (Yoshi, Bounce, Shaun Burner, Jesse Hernandez, Nancy Hernandez, Keena Romano, Franklin Cartagena, Brian Augsburger, Pierre Knox, and Eli Fantuzzi). This event was a collaborative effort between many artists, activists, and organizations with the goal of seeing activism, poverty, or health as "connected" things. And if you are in Chicago, Houston, NYC, or the Bay Area I urge you to go check it out. There was a Graffiti Battle, Hella Bicycles, Dance performances, spoken word, huge open space and a park for the babies, a skate board competition, live music, vendors, and tons of positive messages for the "hood" such as the one you see me holding in the photo.

"Drink Me" Mag Illustration

This is a piece for Drink Me Magazine about wild yeast in beers. I don't drink beer, or even drink that much but this magazine had some interesting pieces about ancient moonshines of Mexico. So, I hit up their art director Mr. Lance Jackson(who's illustration on the cover caught my attention), and he guided me through the process. Check it out. I know some of you are wondering why I'm doing this. Well, stay tuned and you will see.Diabolical!

Picking fruit Postcard

Achhheeem, another piece of the diabolical plan, soon to be announced officially. But for now, a peak at it. Meant as a promotional tool for artists, post cards are sent out to Art Directors, blah, blah, blah. The only tried and true appreciators I have of my art are my family, my crew, and you. Put this on the refrigerator in your restaurant, conference room, or home. If you know NO ONE with a refrigerator, at least let me know what it makes you think of.

I painted this nearly 10 years ago. Although life is filled with contradictions, I have hella (a lot of) respect for this MC. The first 2 people who comment on this post with the title of one of his songs or even a name of one of his crew mates will win a hand drawn portrait (like this).

Tanehisi Coates-Mosaic Magazine 24

Last year I did a cover for MOSAIC Magazine and just recently looked back at all the drawings. The person on the cover is writer/author Tanehisi Coates, a very intelligent brother who writes from the heart. It came out pretty fresh and I wanted to show the process, so here you go. If you like it, please bug Ron from Mosaic for copies for your school, office, work, etc. This issue also contained an interview with writer Junot Diaz, and my first published piece about the comic "Brotherman" by Dawud Anyabwile.
