Character 71-74 -Steel, Q, Raheem, and Bishop

This is one of my all time favorite flicks. Ever. It is mostly because of this flick that I went on a mission to buy turntables and become a "bedroom" dj. I've seen this movie so many times I could probably recite every line from it. Loved the production, cinematography, acting, and music! I hope Ernest Dickerson makes another drama like this. What was your favorite part of Juice?

Colorlines "Morning Rush" lettering

Just finished this hand lettered type for Colorlines magazine. This is a great honor since I read the magazine and subscribe to it on many social networks. They are always on top of so many issues I want to know about involving education, media, law, activism, entertainment, etc and they have a keen eye for giving light to stories about people of color that many news outlets ignore until there is a national movement or protest in favor of it. Morning Rush is a place where you can find weekly articles that the their editorial team are reading and will most likely cover. Check them out. Thank you Colorlines! Shout out to my Art Director on this, designer Erin Zipper.

Pattern painting 1

Trying a new series style. Or, just giving an existing muse some light. No letters, just color and patterns.

Mujeres Unidas/ CA Domestic Workers Coalition

Been working on this for a bit. Two flyers meant as outreach and informational tools that Mujeres Unidas will use for outreach. In case you didn't know, domestic workers (Nanny's, Maid's, In home care givers, and more) often go without the proper pay, sick days, holidays, paid leave, and a lot of abuse. This past year California Governor Jerry Brown was forced to sign a new bill of rights guaranteeing rights to workers. Both myself and my mom have cleaned houses before and I have met many people who do this hard/honest work who are US citizens, imagine what kinds of protection you have if you are a recent immigrant or not a citizen.. Anyway, stepping down from soap box, Check out the work.

Handstyles 5- BDP "Why is that"

The lyrics are from a Boogie Down Productions record called "Why is that?"
on the Blueprint album in 1989. Original photo? Possibly Doug Rowell. Not sure.

What is this? Handstyles! For as long as I've been drawing I've been practicing lettering. First i. the form of Graffiti, then calligraphy, graphic design, kerning, type setting, sign painting, and so many other forms. I'm not a designer or a lettering specialist, but I can hand write a few different styles and enjoy hand lettering when it's done right.

Dig this? Check out these letters for Hyphen or Colorlines magazine
Check out this Zach de La Rocha quote

UTNE Reader Illustration 3-The Venus Project

This was a quick sentence, thought I would try something different in the approach. Consider it "sitting high up" and looking at or marveling at nature. Reminds me of Movement Generations mission.

Muphoric Sounds 38-Aretha Franklin

There are a few good songs on this LP, I chose to write about "Only the one you love" on Muphoric Sounds. Go

The New Jim Crow-Inspiration

Reading it and shaking my head, cursing, gasping, or tearing up while doing it.

Repost from my facebook: Ever since I was a child listening to my parents/relatives discuss heavy/ difficult to understand topics I had a hunch (like many of you) that "this" was all an elaborate set up, play, theater, cruel game. Reading "The New Jim Crow" (on the late bus, I know) is one of the puzzle pieces confirming that hunch. Sisters seem to already know what time it is w/ this book. But guys/brothers-have you heard of it? Its deep and its at the library for free 99. http://newjimcrow.com/

UTNE Reader Illustration 2- Teach kids to code

This one is about coding and a teacher who wrote in about what she does in her class! Had fun trying to make a picture that shows a kid posing while in class, and a bunch of kids learning. With programs like Black Girls Code or Girls Who Code Team, this quick drawing reminded me of that. Shout out to Art director Suzanne Lindgren. See the original post
