College lecture - Modesto Jr College

Sup with it fam! On March 29th of this year I will be doing a presentation for college students and faculty at Modesto Jr College! I'm going to be talking about my career, art, kids books, publishing, and literacy! I've visited Modesto and the jr college three times in the past. First for the Latino Comics Expo founded by Ricardo Padilla and Javier Hernandez-the first ever comics con dedicated to Latino Comics writers and illustrators. Second, I visited the main branch of the Modesto Public Library to read to families, children, and caregivers for their story time. Third, I visited for the "Latinx Comics and Arts Fest" founded by Dr. Theresa Rojas , a professor from MJC.

All of these were really great events or experiences filled with families, community, incredible creators, art, and lots of books and comics. If you're a student at the college or know someone who is please invite them to attend.

If you're looking for something to do with the entire family, check out the Latinx Comics and Arts Fest happening on March 17-18th.

Dig this? Check out this interview I did with my bro Farbeon on Feel Good Radio. Also, this is a recent school visit for Prospect Sierra in Berkeley California.

Storytime Friends

Hey yall, I’m happy to be a part of a new crew called STORYTIME FRIENDS w/ Peter Limata, Angela Dalton, Michael Genhart, Meera Sriram, and Alex Giardino, a community-centered project that brings the joy of picture books to children’s hospitals. STORYTIME FRIENDS features a video-recorded read-aloud series, related art activities, and book give-aways. For its inaugural year, the project has partnered with UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital and more than forty authors and illustrators. The series host Mr. Peter Limata kicks everything off on November 4 with a video read-aloud of Dr. Rachel Remen’s The Birthday of the World, which will be aired at the hospital for the children. My book "Alejandria Fights Back" will be featured later in the series along with 40 author/illustrators across the Bay Area!!

Side By Side by Marilisa Jiménez Garcia

This is really cool to see! The cover of this new book features an illustration I created for a series of "story time" posters I started two years ago. I made these images because I wanted to contribute some reflections to reading rooms and areas in libraries. I've seen images of celebrities in "Read" posters but I wanted the images to be of every day people and children.

Scholar Marilisa Jiménez Garcia studies Latinx history and children's literature and has written this book "Side By Side" about the ongoing colonization of Puerto Rico and how media from the US has affected Latinx kids on the island. You can order a copy of the book HERE

2023 Update: The book won an award!!! Amazing!

Heres the description from the book:
During the early colonial encounter, children’s books were among the first kinds of literature produced by US writers introducing the new colony, its people, and the US’s role as a twentieth-century colonial power to the public. Subsequently, youth literature and media were important tools of Puerto Rican cultural and educational elite institutions and Puerto Rican revolutionary thought as a means of negotiating US assimilation and upholding a strong Latin American, Caribbean national stance.

In Side by Side: US Empire, Puerto Rico, and the Roots of American Youth Literature and Culture, author Marilisa Jiménez García focuses on the contributions of the Puerto Rican community to American youth, approaching Latinx literature as a transnational space that provides a critical lens for examining the lingering consequences of US and Spanish colonialism for US communities of color. Through analysis of such texts typically outside traditional Latinx or literary studies as young adult literature, textbooks, television programming, comics, music, curriculum, and youth movements, Side by Side represents the only comprehensive study of the contributions of Puerto Ricans to American youth literature and culture, as well as the only comprehensive study into the role of youth literature and culture in Puerto Rican literature and thought.

Considering recent debates over diversity in children’s and young adult literature and media and the strained relationship between Puerto Rico and the US, Jiménez García's timely work encourages us to question who constitutes the expert and to resist the homogenization of Latinxs, as well as other marginalized communities, that has led to the erasure of writers, scholars, and artists.

Also, check out this other book edited by Marilisa about Puerto Rico.

If you'd like a print of the original illustration, cop one here.

Sam! Copies

Just got my copies, bout to read with Dani tonight at the El Cerrito Public library. And you can get copies at your local bookstore, public library, or order them online HERE.

Again, here's the synopsis of the story:
Sam is a nine-year-old boy who loves riding his bike and learning about the American Revolution. There’s just one problem: Sam’s family knows him as a girl named Isabel. Sam feels a sense of relief when he finally confides in his sister Maggie, and then his parents, even though it takes them a while to feel comfortable with it. But with lots of love and support, Sam and his family learn and grow through Sam’s journey to embrace his true self.  In the vein of I Am Jazz by Jessica Herthel, Sam! is based on a real story. With a note from the author explaining their family’s experience, Sam! is an important addition to a list of books that help children and adults discuss gender identity.

Hana on Stage: Writing

This is a project I finished almost a year ago as a freelance writer. This is my first time working as a freelance writer for children's literature outside of writing my own picture books. I was invited by Sandhya Nankani of Literary Safari who worked with Benchmark Education to create an opportunity for more writers and illustrators of color. The result is a series of stories. This one is a story for kids around 3rd grade.  It's about a mixed kid (of course) who is Latinx/Asian and her name is Hana Dominguez. This was a fun experience and I really enjoyed working with editor Alicia Zadrozny and Eileen Robinson. Here is the synopsis:

Hana Dominguez has a knack for building things. While planning to build a stage for her cat, Purple, she stumbles upon the idea of performing herself. Will Hana be able to take center stage in her local theater's musical revue?

Shout out to Mirelle Ortega beautifully illustrated the book with a great sense of color and composition.
