Character Collage 2020-2022
What up fam, wow its been two years since I uploaded my last character collage. Back in 2020 I was a new dad again, and then the pandemic hit! I have still been sketching, drawing, and painting but lord it was rough balancing the kids at home, my work, and life. So here are a snippet of some of the characters I made over the past two years. This is the 9th time I've uploaded a collage of these over the past 13 years or so. I started making these as a way to practice character based artwork for storytelling, and I still love to do it. Always practicing to see improvement.

Throwback- Characters from The Last Dragon
Yo, if you're a fan of 80s films check out this trio of characters from the classic 80s cult film The Last Dragon.

The film was released in 1985 and featured Taimak, Vanity (rip), Julus Carry (rip), Mike Starr, and a young Ernie Reyes Jr!The director Michael Schultz also made Colley High, Car Wash, and Crush Groove! And the brother is still working today. Sadly we lost both Vanity and Julius who played Sho Nuff, but even three decades after its release folks like me still love this film produced by Barry Gordy and written by Louis Venosta.
Back in 2016 I painted sho Nuff from the film:
And this year I decided to paint both Laura Charles (played by Vanity)
and Bruce Leroy from the film.

Character 164 - Bruce Leroy (Last Dragon)
Ok switching it up again with a time lapse video of this one. This right here is Bruce Leroy, or my version of the actor Taimak from the great 80s film "The Last Dragon". As I stated in the previous post w/ Ms Laura Charles I loved the film as a kid and still love it today even w/ its campy or corny parts.

Yup, had to come back with Laura Charles aka Vanity from the Last Dragon. I painted this piece of Sho Nuff several years back and thought it'd be fun to do a few more from the film. RIP Vanity.

#tbt-Characters from "Stand and Deliver"
I loved the film Stand and Deliver as a kid and still think it's a ground breaking film showing Raza of all kinds learning and studying mathematics. Instead of feeling foreign to math Jaime Escalante makes you feel like you were born to learn it. "You burros got math in your blood" Edward James Olmos says in the film. For a large group of Brown people who were kept out of high paying jobs, building generational wealth, and power by design-learning calculus was and still is revolutionary. It doesn't solve everything by any means, but Jaime's legacy lives on. Have you seen the film? Whats your fav part?

Character Collage (5) 2015-2016
I love drawing realistic and exaggerated characters. Especially people who are not often drawn! I started doing these character collages as a way to practice and challenge myself over 5 years ago. I've been into drawing characters for ever. Once a month, 10 a year, doesn't really matter, its more about practicing and getting the ideas out. Character 116 - Tito (Stand and Deliver)
Tito was the coolest dude in Jaime Escalante's class. I wondered what kind of a band he played in and what his character did on the weekends when not in school. Of course, he looks like he was in his twenties. Tito is a character from a late 80s a film called "Stand and Deliver" that gave me a gift. As a child watching this film I recognized some of the characters, but didn't know so many of them. This is a rare portrait of latinos in East LA at the time. In Hollywood films Latinos were and still are tropes, stereotypes, and tired shells of characters if they are seen at all. Most of the time Raza are invisible in film, but in "Stand and Deliver" we get to see a variety of nuance, layer, and subtlety because the teens in Mr. Jaime Escalante's class were not one type. They were jocks, nerds, princesses, rockers, thugs, students, and kids who could not be categorized. If you have never seen the film, or if you haven't seen it since you were a kid I recommend re-watching it. The genius portrayal of a Bolivian math teacher who challenged and inspired a generation. The effects of his work to teach algebra than calculus are still being felt.

Character 115 - Ana Delgado (Stand and Deliver)
I loved Ana's character in the film. She was so quiet and seemed to be showing only the tip of the iceberg when it came to her personality. Working in her family's restaurant and not expected to do anything more than what her parents did before her; she rises to the occasion in Jaime Escalante's calculus class. Whats "Cal-Culus" ? This character is "Angel" who is not what he seems. You might see thug or cholo, and that is part of his character. But in the film we get to see so much more of who he is. Characters 108- Katara & Toph
Katara and Toph chillin', catching up on old times. If you have children, you know who these characters are and what strength they represent as part of the Avatar series. One bends and controls water, one bends and controls earth/metal.

Character 107-Sho-Nuff (Last Dragon)
Am I the prettiest?! Sho-Nuff! Do you remember this character? The actor that played him was Julius Carry the third. He died in 2008 unfortunately, but not before a long and extensive career acting in film and tv. The film is one of my all time favorites. The fact that I got to see a black protagonist who was into martial arts as a kid was pretty awesome. So were all the characters. But i especially loved Sho-Nuff!!

Character 106-Data (Goonies)
Data gliding across a zip line into the front screen door of Mikey's house. Anybody remember watching this movie as a kid? The Goonies was one of my favorite films as a kid. I loved all of the characters. There are definitely some problematic parts (Rosita) but the films search for treasure is what many kids are wishing for in this day and age of people being evicted. Anyways, whats your favorite line Data said? Do you remember which character was wearing a Purple Rain shirt?

Inktober 25- Chun-Li (Street Fighter)
As a kid i played video games in arcades and one of my all time favorites was Street Fighter, a game designed by Takasahi Nishiyama in the1980s for the Japanese based company Capcom. Originally it hit arcades in the states around 87. Shit really hit the fan when they released Street Fighter 2, which is when I found it. To date there are many characters, some from the original two games and many additions. Chun-Li was always one of my favorites.

Inktober 10- The Green Turtle (Shadow Hero)
Love this character that I learned about through author Gene Luen Yang and illustrator Sonny Liew. Its based off a much older character from the 30s I believe which is the first Chinese American Superhero in comics. Their book called "The Shadow Hero " is an awesome read and perfect for any school aged child that can read on their own. I met both guys and they were really nice, very down to earth. Listen to them speak about it.
